FED:Tiger court hearing adjourned to next week
Grounded airline Tiger Airways Australia should know by the end of next week whether
it can resume flights, after a court hearing on its suspension was again adjourned.
The Federal Court hearing over the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's grounding of the
airline has been adjourned for a fifth time today.
It's been set down for a mention next Thursday morning.
NICHOLAS HARRINGTON, the Counsel for CASA, says the parties are genuinely talking and
working through the issues and it's expected the matter will be resolved without the need
for a hearing within a week.
Tiger's counsel RICHARD DAVIS says the only remaining matters are administrative.

RL:Storm skipper keen to play on after 2015
By Melissa Woods
MELBOURNE, April 10 AAP - Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith doesn't know if he'll be
playing alongside newly re-signed fullback Billy Slater at the NRL club in 2015.
It's not that Smith is considering playing anywhere else, it's just that he doesn't
think his body will be up to it.
"I'd love to stay here, it's just that I don't know if I can get to 2015," said Smith,
who at 27 was born on exactly the same day as Slater.
"I do a fair few more tackles than Billy does," he added with a laugh.
"When you've for Fuifui Moimoi running at you and Nathan Hindmarsh it takes its toll.
"But you ask anyone who plays at this club, you'd love to stay as long as you can...why
would you want to be anywhere else?"
The skipper, himself signed until 2014, said the contract extension for Slater, who
has stated he wants to be a Storm player for life, was a coup for the club.
"It's huge, it's great for the club and for the city for Bill to re-sign," Smith said.
"Looking to the future it's great for our recruitment, to say that you're going to
get a chance to play alongside one of the best players in the game, it will hold a lot
of weight."
After a sluggish start to the season following shoulder surgery, Slater turned in another
starring performance in the team's seven-try 38-0 romp over Parramatta.
As well as saving a certain try, he scored one of his own and had a hand in at least two others.
The Test custodian and father of two said negotiations started about six months ago,
although he wasn't considering going elsewhere.
"I was always happy to stay at this club and I feel very privileged to have the opportunity
to stay because a lot of my good mates would have loved to have stayed but had to be moved
on...
"This is my ninth season now and this club's given me a lot and I feel this is where I belong."

FED:NBN not a 'cheap-price nirvana': Turnbull
By Adam Bennett
SYDNEY, Dec 20 AAP - Federal opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull says
a National Broadband Network (NBN) business plan released by the government shows there
will be "no nirvana for cheaper broadband".
Restating the coalition's opposition to the $35.9 billion NBN, Mr Turnbull said the
business plan released by the government on Monday was "not really a business plan"
"This has just got summary financials," he said.
Under the NBN, telecommunications wholesalers will pay at least $24 a month for a basic
plan, which will offer download speeds of 12 megabits per second and upload speeds of
one megabit per second.
However, the plan gave no indication of what price retailers will charge for access
to the high-speed, fibre optic network.
Mr Turnbull said the price of the basic plan was comparable with what was currently
available on the market.
"It's supposed to deliver universal and affordable broadband, and yet the broadband
price that they've talked about today ... is comparable, it is certainly no cheaper than
many comparable prices for 12 megabits per second for broadband ADSL2+," he told reporters
in Sydney.
"This is no nirvana for cheaper broadband for Australians."
Along with the base wholesale price, the long-awaited business plan also reveals a
predicted seven per cent internal rate of return for NBN Co Ltd.
The assumption is based on a 70 per cent takeup of the network by businesses and homes.
Further to the expected rate of return is the prediction of a $13.4 billion capital
raising from the markets by 2015.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the business plan showed the $35.9 billion network
was financially viable.
Taxpayers' investment "will be returned with interest," Ms Gillard said.
But Mr Turnbull questioned the "monstrous" investment in the network.
He doubted if there was a widespread need for the 100 megabit per second speeds detailed
in the plan, and said many Australians with inadequate broadband services would have to
wait more then a decade for improvements.
"This is massively overcapitalised, it is going to be too slow in terms of rectify
service inadequacies around Australia," he said.
"There is a very real risk that this massive investment will turn out to be a glorious
white elephant, another monument to Labor folly."
Opposition leader Tony Abbott said the details released by the government did nothing
to change the coalition's stance on the NBN - or what he derisively called the "Nationalised
Broadcasting Network".
"It's pretty obvious that the main usage for the NBN is going to be internet-based
television, video entertainment and gaming," Mr Abbott said.
"As far as the coalition is concerned there is nothing wrong with any of this, but
given all of the infrastructure needs facing Australia's roads, railways, ports, health,
education, let alone the problems with voice telephony, it's far from clear that this
really is a sensible investment."
Mr Abbott again called for a cost benefit analysis of the broadband network, which
was lacking in the plan released by the government.
"A massive infrastructure investment of this kind should not be made without a proper
cost benefit analysis," he said.
"We've been calling all along for the national broadband network to be submitted to
full cost benefit analysis by the productivity commission - the government still does
not trust its case for that kind of scrutiny."

NSW: Carr, Keneally welcome appointment of population minister
SYDNEY, April 3 AAP - Former NSW premier Bob Carr says the federal government's appointment
of Australia's first population minister reflects increasing concern about high immigration
levels.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Saturday announced the appointment of Tony Burke to the new post.
Mr Rudd had been under pressure to better examine the nation's population, which is
on a trajectory to reach 35.9 million by 2050.
Mr Carr said it was clear Mr Rudd had "listened to the many expressions of concern".
"As a critic of high immigration, I welcome the announcement," he told AAP.
"It reflects increasing concern that Australia is going to pay a very high price if
current high immigration levels continue until we reach a population of 35 million by
2050.
"It's not only environmental madness, it's economic madness as well."
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally said the appointment was a major step in planning for
Australia and in particular Sydney, which is expected to reach a population of six million
by 2036.
"The new minister is important as NSW will take in the largest percentage of new residents,
and population growth will have the greatest impact on NSW," Ms Keneally said in a statement.

NT: Men charged over attack on sleeping Korean backpacker
By Tara Ravens
DARWIN, Aug 21 AAP - A man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted a Korean backpacker
while she slept in her van in Darwin.
Her friend, woken by the early morning attack, jumped behind the wheel and drove off
and then crashed into another car at the Darwin waterfront.
Police said the Korean nationals, aged 24 and 25, had parked their white Mitsubishi
Magna station wagon outside the World War II storage tunnels on Kitchener Drive on Tuesday
night.
They went to sleep about 9pm (CST) but were awoken about eight hours later when one
of two men, aged 22 and 24, allegedly entered the back of the vehicle.
The older man has been accused of indecently assaulting one of the backpackers and
waking her friend, who rushed to the front of the van, got behind the wheel and drove
off in a panic.
Police said she subsequently crashed into a parked car in front of the Medina Vibe Hotel.
"The females, in a panic, had started their car and attempted to leave the area in
a hurry but struck a parked vehicle at the hotel," Duty Superintendent Dean Maloney told
ABC Radio on Thursday.
He said the officers who arrived at the scene found the two travellers in "a very distressed
state".
The two men fled the scene in a white, late model dual-cab Nissan Navara but police
tracked them down in the nearby suburb of Stuart Park on Thursday.
A spokeswoman for police media on Friday said the oldest of the alleged offenders has
been charged with indecent assault and interfering with a motor vehicle.
He will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on September 10.
The other man has not been charged but will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
The attack prompted police to warn travellers to seek out accommodation in backpacker
hostels, motels or camping grounds, rather than pulling their cars over on the side of
the road.
"It seems to be a common occurrence, and particularly they seek out isolated areas
around the fringes of town to do that," Supt Maloney said.
"And it does have its inherent dangers."

Tuesday, June 13, 2006 -- The runaway success of The Da Vinci Code points to a human desire by some for a more human Jesus and a more humane religion.
Faith has become so harsh in our time, so inhuman, that hundreds of millions have turned to the New Age to accommodate their spiritual needs in utter rejection of organized religion.
Those most to blame are Muslim extremists who kill in the name of God. But Christians and Jews are also guilty of displaying the hard edge of faith.
Many Christian evangelicals act as if they believe that the essence of Christianity is best captured in hating gays. Likewise, I heard just this week that a Chabad colleague of mine from New Jersey suggested, in a private discussion forum of the Rebbe's emissaries on the Internet, that I should not be called up to the Torah, were I to turn up at a Chabad House -apparently because on my TV show, Shalom in the Home, I had counseled a lesbian couple with children.
This suggestion, which was seriously debated in a rabbinical forum, shocked me because the Rebbe, one of the great spiritual figures of all time, electrified the world with his love for every Jew and, indeed, every human being. The Rebbe loved even a wretch like me, and saw promise where others saw flaws.
But the Rebbe is dead and much of his legacy of love has been buried as many in Chabad, the world's most outstanding and devoted educational movement, fight each other in court over control of the organization.
Yes, people are tired of harsh religion that is all about judgment and not about love, all about rejection and not about acceptance, all about condemnation and not about inspiration.
AS A JEW, I have watched the Da Vinci Code debate with utter fascination, as the Catholic Church cries foul and Christians the world over shout sacrilege. Now what was Dan Brown's offense? Did he call Jesus a pedophile, echoing former Southern Baptist Convention President Jerry Vines's comments about Muhammad?
No, his blasphemy was that he dared to imagine that Jesus took a wife - that Jesus, like us, got lonely, that he sought the divinely sanctioned companionship of marriage, that he sired children within wedlock, and that before he died on the cross at the hands of the Romans, he took comfort in knowing that not only his teachings, but his offspring would endure.
How fascinating that a man's humanity could itself be considered profanity, that human frailty could be considered an affront to faith, that the very notion of Jesus as a man could so offend our Christian brethren.
To me it has always been precisely the opposite. It is the men who think that they do not need others, who go through life without ever truly connecting with or leaning on other souls, the bachelors who think that no woman is good enough for them, which is the truest affront to God.
In Judaism, it is not marriage which is a sin, but celibacy, not the admission of loneliness but the posture of arrogance. Is the human condition really so revolting to some of our Christian brothers and sisters that the mere notion that Jesus shared in any of its vicissitudes would constitute the ultimate injury to faith?
INDEED, ONE of the principal partings of the ways between Christianity and Judaism lies in the simple definition of righteousness. For Christians, righteousness implies perfection. Jesus was righteous because he had within nothing but goodness, and Christian saints are likewise paragons of complete and unalloyed virtue.
But for Jews, righteousness implies not perfection but struggle, not a total devotion to rectitude but a conscious decision to wrestle with one's demons and choose uprightness amid a predilection to choose otherwise.
I prefer to identify with the imperfections of Abraham, with the blemishes of Jacob, and with the failings of King David, all of whom, amid a human penchant for sin, ultimately triumphed over their natures and lived lives of exemplary Godliness.
Many Jews wonder why Judaism lacks the appeal of Christianity. But people prefer perfect personalities, through whom they may live vicariously, and choose heroes who are larger than life rather over those who are condemned to forever wrestle with their spirit.
I have seen the same when it comes to counseling.
American television has two kinds of family therapists. There are those who feign faultlessness. They are not afflicted by the same failures as their supplicants and talk down to their patients. I have employed precisely the opposite approach. When I see a husband who loses his temper, I confess to him the same transgression, and share with him how I wrestle to overcome destructive, family- harming patterns.
But then, I am comforted by remembering that God does not demand perfection but exertion, not victory but struggle, and that the definition of a good man is not he who has never erred, but he who is not so arrogant as to believe that he is any better than any other of God's beloved children.

Apr. 4--The name "Sam's Diner" has about as much Mexican authenticity as a plastic jalapeqo.
But Michel Zajur Sr., a native of Zacatecas, Mexico, kept the name when he opened a restaurant specializing in international foods in the old Sam's Diner off Jefferson Davis Highway in 1972. He didn't want to scare off the loyal customers.
"Back then, Mexican food ... was almost like a taboo in Richmond," said Zajur's 42-year-old son, Michel.
At first, the elder Zajur offered one Mexican combo plate and had to grow jalapeqos out back because he couldn't buy them locally.
Nearly 30 years later, Zajur's children run the business, which wholeheartedly celebrates Mexican culture and has long since been renamed La Siesta Restaurant.
It was moved from Jefferson Davis Highway in 1979 and eventually settled on Midlothian Turnpike, near Robious Road. For about five years in the 1980s, the Zajurs operated a La Siesta in the West End.
Since they've been in control, the Zajur children have avoided tinkering too much with the business recipe.
They haven't wanted to lose their focus of providing fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine in a family atmosphere, said Michel Zajur, who manages the business with his younger brother, George.
Sisters Lourdes, Ruth and Andrea serve as hostesses and help run the day-to-day affairs. Their parents and sister Amelia live in the Richmond area but are no longer regularly involved in the operation.
"I'm very family-oriented," Michel Zajur said. "I didn't want to take away, but I'm at a point now that I'm taking a very aggressive stance" business-wise.
About four years ago, La Siesta started selling three of its salsas -- white, red and green -- in Ukrop's Super Markets. It now moves about 50 cases a week, about double the initial sales, he said.
He said La Siesta has started working with a food lab in Norfolk to try to give the salsas a longer shelf life. He's hoping to sell them in more grocery stores, as well as over the Internet (www.eatsalsa.com).
"To go out real big, you have to put preservatives in it," he said. "This is all natural."
In addition, Michel Zajur said he's involved in preliminary talks about opening a second restaurant in the area but declined to discuss details.
Ruth Zajur said her brother has long carried the vision for the restaurant and has been its heart and soul.
"Michel's identity is tied up in La Siesta," she said. "He welcomes the people as a guest in our home, rather than just a customer."
Michel Zajur's interest in promoting his Mexican heritage took shape when he was growing up in Henrico County's West End and was the only Spanish-speaker in his elementary school. He's enjoyed seeing the number of Hispanics in the Richmond area grow.
The 1990 U.S. Census showed just more than 5,000 people of Hispanic origin living in Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield. The 2000 Census is expected to show a substantial increase.
Over the years, Michel Zajur has served on a variety of community panels, including at least three years on a foreign language committee for the Chesterfield County school system.
"He was always there, always on time, always proactive in helping us keep foreign language visible in the community," said Jane J. Baskerville, Chesterfield's instructional specialist for foreign languages.
In addition, Michel Zajur served on an advisory board for the Richmond International Children's Festival and represented the Hispanic community in a diversity conference sponsored by the Virginia Department of Agriculture.
However, his talents shine most when he's working with children, Ruth Zajur said. La Siesta regularly invites school groups to the restaurant for programs showcasing Mexican culture. Michel, who leads the programs dressed in a sombrero and poncho, provides the magic -- literally and figuratively.
"We do them because he has this real love for children," Ruth Zajur said. "He wants them to be bilingual."
Michel Zajur said he simply feeds off the children's enthusiasm. "I think it's something, because when I was growing up people would come up to me and say, 'Do they have TVs? Do they drive cars in Mexico?' I take pride. I'm sharing my Mexican culture."
In addition, Michel Zajur and his wife, Lisa, are writing a book on Mexican culture. He said it's important for people to understand different cultures and not get stuck on stereotypes.
He said the meaning behind the name of his family's restaurant is often misunderstood. A "siesta" should be associated with a break with family and friends, not sleep, he said.
"If you learn the culture, you understand the people," he said.

British Telecommunications plc (``BT'') and AT&T Corp. (``AT&T'') today announced that they have agreed on two important transactions in Canada.
First, BT and AT&T will jointly acquire a 33 per cent equity stake in Rogers Cantel Mobile Communications Inc. (``Rogers Cantel'') for an aggregate of approximately Cdn $1.4 billion (US $934 million, pnds stlg577 million) in cash. The transaction significantly enhances the relationship between Rogers Cantel and AT&T formed in 1996, while adding a major new international partner.
Second, BT will acquire 30 per cent of AT&T's 31 per cent equity position in AT&T Canada for approximately Cdn $600 million (US $402 million, pnds stlg248 million).
In addition, Rogers Cantel and AT&T Canada will accelerate the bundling and joint marketing of wired and wireless services for Canadian business customers.
These transactions, following the BT and AT&T joint investment in Japan Telecom in April of this year, are the second major joint initiatives by BT and AT&T since the two companies announced their proposed US $10 billion global venture last year.
The closing of the transactions is expected to take place on or about August 16th, 1999. There is a payment for non-completion of the Rogers Cantel transaction payable by AT&T and BT to Rogers Cantel of Cdn $1.50 per share.
John D. Zeglis, President of AT&T, said, ``Today's announcements represent a deepening of our commitment to the Canadian marketplace. The combination of AT&T, BT, Rogers Cantel and AT&T Canada will give Canadian businesses even better access to unrivaled mobile and wired services nationwide. And through our global joint venture with BT, Canadian companies will enjoy the seamless worldwide services they need to compete in the economy of the 21st century.''
Alfred T. Mockett, President and CEO of BT Worldwide, said, ``Rogers Cantel and AT&T Canada represent a significant addition to our global family of alliances and will enable BT to take an active part in the Canadian mobile and business wireline markets. Today's announcements are consistent with BT's strategy of concentrating on the fast moving, high growth areas of mobile, Internet and data communications.''
Edward S. (``Ted'') Rogers, Rogers Communications Inc. (``RCI'') President and CEO, said, ``This is an important day for RCI, Rogers Cantel and for the Canadian telecommunications marketplace. Today we are positioning Rogers Cantel for the future by aligning our Canadian strengths in wireless with two global telecommunications leaders, BT and AT&T.''
Charles E. Hoffman, Rogers Cantel's President and CEO said, ``Rogers Cantel embarked on the first stage of its relationship with AT&T in 1996 with a branding and technology alliance that included the co-branding of our products and services as Cantel AT&T. Today, we are strengthening that relationship to ensure that our customers and all Canadians will continue to have access to the best technology and wireless services wherever they travel -- across North America and internationally.''
James J. Meenan, Vice Chairman and CEO, AT&T Canada, said, ``We are delighted that BT has given AT&T Canada such a significant vote of confidence. This agreement further enhances our ability to offer one-stop shopping for business customers, provides seamless global reach for our Canadian business customers and closer ties with UK-based multi-national corporations.''
Summary of the Investment in Rogers Cantel by AT&T Corp. and BT
BT and AT&T will jointly acquire a 33.3 per cent equity stake in Rogers Cantel Mobile Communications Inc. (``Rogers Cantel'') for an aggregate of approximately Cdn $1.4 billion (US$934 million, pnds stlg577 million) in cash. This ownership position will be held through a newly established entity (``Wireless Co''), 50 per cent owned by AT&T and 50 per cent owned by BT.
Wireless Co will purchase approximately 27.8 million new convertible preferred shares from Rogers Cantel at a price of Cdn $34.70 per share. These convertible preferred shares will be convertible on a one-for-one basis after one year from the date of issue into approximately 15.3 million Class A Multiple Voting Shares and 12.4 million Class B Restricted Voting Shares. AT&T will also contribute 1.04 million Class B Restricted Voting Shares to Wireless Co acquired by AT&T pursuant to its 1996 brand agreement with Rogers Cantel. The price paid represents a premium of approximately 27 per cent over the 30-day average closing price and approximately 29 per cent over the 60-day average closing price of the underlying Rogers Cantel Class B Restricted Voting Shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Rogers Cantel will receive approximately Cdn $964 million into its treasury on the issue of these shares. In addition, Wireless Co will acquire approximately 12.3 million Class A Multiple Voting Shares of Rogers Cantel from
RCI, also at a price of Cdn $34.70 per share, for a total of Cdn $427 million. As a result of these transactions, on a fully diluted basis, Wireless Co will own 33.3 per cent of the equity and 30.6 per cent of the Class A voting shares of Rogers Cantel. Under the Telecommunications Act, non-Canadians can own no more than 33.3 per cent of the voting shares of a Canadian telecommunications holding company such as Rogers Cantel. After this transaction, RCI will continue to own 69.4 per cent of the Class A Voting shares and 50.9 per cent of the equity of Rogers Cantel, on a fully diluted basis.
AT&T and BT will share four of the 16 Rogers Cantel board seats and will be granted other governance rights customary in a transaction of this nature. In addition, RCI has granted Wireless Co a right of first negotiation on the control block of Rogers Cantel, in the event that RCI wishes to sell control of Rogers Cantel.
AT&T Wireless Services will continue its long standing relationship with Rogers Cantel as North America's two largest TDMA providers with seamless cross-border capabilities and their highly successful Digital One-Rate(R) plan.
Summary of BT's Purchase of Interest in AT&T Canada from AT&T Corp.
BT will acquire 30 per cent of AT&T's 31 per cent ownership position in AT&T Canada for Cdn $600 million (US $402 million, pnds stlg248 million), which was calculated on the approximate 45 trading day, weighted average trading price of AT&T Canada on the Toronto Stock Exchange. This ownership position will be held through a newly established entity for interests in Canadian wireline operations (``Wireline Co''), 70 per cent owned by AT&T and 30 per cent owned by BT.
Wireline Co will hold approximately 30.8 per cent of the equity and 23.3 per cent of the voting interest in AT&T Canada.
Under the agreement, BT is obligated to participate in the second phase of AT&T's merger agreement with AT&T Canada up to a cap of Cdn $1.65 billion. AT&T Corp. retains the obligation beyond $1.65 billion to the full extent of the back end takeout.
Upon the closing of AT&T's sale of 30 per cent of its ownership position in AT&T Canada to BT, AT&T Canada will be beneficially owned 9 per cent by BT, 22 per cent by AT&T, and 69 per cent by the company's public shareholders. AT&T has agreed to grant one of its four board seats on the 12-member AT&T Canada board to a BT designee.
AT&T Corp. was advised by CIBC World Markets on both transactions. BT was advised by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Rogers Cantel was advised by NM Rothschild & Sons Canada Limited.

People only help if they get something in return.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
My family and I have been living in Dubai for eight years now, and I read Latika's letter with interest - it raised good points.
But it will be very difficult to imagine these things ie helpfulness, pride in the city etc. in action here. This is because Dubai, by its very nature, is a transactional city. Every relationship or interaction is viewed in terms of what benefit it will offer to both parties. No benefit equals none or minimal interaction. Dubai is often called a "W i i FM" city - "What's In It For Me"!
However much we may talk about being nice etc, this is a reality. Half of the people here are struggling with day to day life - rents, school fees, traffic, no public transport etc., and that too in the absence of any extended family or support systems, which they would have in their home countries. They neither have the energy nor inclination to be nice.
The other half, who have it a little better, feel superior and use their time to interact with people who can help them advance in their careers or make more money. To give an example, one of my friends doesn't drive and as her kids go to the same school as her neighbour's kids, who did drive, she asked for a lift to a couple of school events when her husband was travelling and the lady obliged . From the 'being nice' perspective - makes sense doesn't it? Well, one day when my friend called up to have a chat with her neighbour on something unrelated, she could sense the reluctance on the other's part to even carry on a conversation. My friend then realised that the other lady was apprehensive that another favour would be asked for - so nobody does anything here unless they get something in return! So there you have it!
Thanks and regards,
Disillusioned
