VIC: Main stories in today's Melbourne newspapers = 2
THE AGE:
Page 1: Some private school fees will soar to almost $29,000 next year, increasing
by almost three times the rate of inflation, despite the Senate approving $28 billion
for private school funding until 2012. Plans to buy 52 trains and 50 trams for Melbourne,
as well as 20 trains for regional Victoria, will be unveiled today as John Brumby seeks
to lay claim to the title of "the public transport Premier".
Page 2: Spend, spend, spend -- that's the urgent advice Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is
delivering to two million families and four million pensioners who will from today receive
the largesse from the government's $10 billion stimulus package.
Page 3: A senior Chinese climate adviser has warned that Australia would derail global
climate talks if its 2020 greenhouse target was less than a 25 per cent cut in emissions.
World: Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for united, international intervention
in Zimbabwe, urging world leaders to tell the Mugabe government that "enough is enough".
Finance: Melburnians can expect to see fewer cranes in the sky next year as commercial
projects are shelved and builders struggle to maintain their usual volume of work.
Sport: Australian cricket coach Tim Nielsen has admitted his pacemen have erred in
their approach to reverse swing in recent seasons, but is confident of an improved old-ball
performance against the South Africans.
