Fed: More males needed in nursing: senate committee
A senate committee has found more men need to be recruited into the medical professionas nurses despite its predominantly female workforce.
The Sun-Herald newspaper reports the bi-partisan committee found that in four years, the number of male enrolled nurses increased by only 0.1 per cent, and registered malenurses by only 0.4 per cent.
The committee says male nurses represent only 6.3 per cent of all enrolled nurses andeight per cent of the more qualified registered nurses.
The committee has also found that policy and decision makers in the healthcare industryhave failed to recognise the contribution nurses make to the system.
It recommends better pay and conditions for nurses and a national registration forall nurses to make interstate relocation more viable.
