Paul J. Tanna (op-ed, March 23) gives a very telling description of the failure of the Catholic bishops and of official church pronouncements to deal adequately with the problem of sex abuse among the clergy.
This brings up a deeper and wider problem concerning an understanding of the church. Currently, most people understand the church to be the hierarchy: bishops, cardinals, officials in the Vatican, including the Pope. They are seen as exercising ruling authority and teaching power over the faithful.
